Kampung Saya (Malaysia Day Special) | Terengganu Darul Iman, Abode of Faith
When I think of Terengganu, I’ll always remember this heartwarming story a local told my sub-editor while she was on holiday in Terengganu. She found out that Michael Schumacher regularly stayed at Tanjong Jara Resort in Dungun, Terengganu, before the Grand Prix that took place in Sepang. The 7-time Formula One World Champion even sponsored to build a football field for the locals which is why the field is named Padang Schumacher (Schumacher Field).
The locals even said whenever he visited Tanjong Jara, he would play football with the children in the kampung(village). He enjoyed the time spent playing with them so much that he decided to give back by giving them a proper football field to play on.
As Mother Teresa always say, 'Let us not be satisfied with just giving money. Money is not enough, they need your hearts to love them.' Who else can say that they’ve played football with Michael Schumacher besides the lucky children in Terengganu? Not many, I assume!
And let’s not forget about their delicious keropok lekor! Terengganu’s most famous local delight is keropok lekor. If anyone asks how it is made, it’s actually made from a combination of sago flour and pounded mackerel & sardines! Yeah, I know it doesn’t sound that tasty… but it’s God-sent. A visit to Terengganu wouldn’t be complete without a taste of keropok lekor!
